Example contemporary bungalow house extension plans - Suffolk The following example is of a tired 1960's style bungalow which on a large plot with land and views to the rear. The owners of the home wished to be able to enjoy their views from the living room and kitchen as well as having a clean transition between their living spaces and their garden where they regularly entertain guests. Also required was an en-suite to the master bedroom, porch extension and plenty of storage. The design was for a contemporary, single storey extension to the rear forming a court yard which then leads onto the rear garden and adjoining fields. The design was carefully balanced so as to enhance the rural setting of the home and yet have a modern edge. The rear courtyard is accessed from the breakfast room and the living room, large sliding folding doors allows the walls to be opened up allowing the indoor space to flow outside, yet the fabric of the building has been design such that in winter, the house is efficient and warm. Sun shadow studies were carried out to determine the optimum location of sun shading to as to control the amount of summer sun from entering the large glazed areas of the home yet still allow in as much of the low winter sun as practical. High, raked ceilings have been incorporated into the design which provides a feeling of space as you enter and enjoy the new rooms. High level glazing separating the kitchen/breakfast room from the living dining room has been decorated with a stained glass effect stencil dropping an attractive lighting effect into the rooms below which changes throughout the day as the sun passes over. Velux roof windows have been included into the design not just to provide natural daylight, but to also serve as an effective passive ventilation system keeping the house cool in summer and changing the air rapidly. The existing bathroom was retained however this became an internal room, to provide effective natural daylight and Solatube was installed. To the front of the bungalow the porch was extended to make it more functional. A small side extension was added to incorporate an en-suite off the master bedroom and the existing flat roof was stripped from the garage and replaced with a more attractive and lower maintenance pitched tiled roof.
